Morgan through the years - on her way to being 4

Sometimes you forget how much a child can grow in one year!  As a countdown to Morgan's 4th birthday, it's amazing to see those changes!

Things I will pray for this week

Of course we pray for a great many things, but in case the business of life gets to me, here are some things I will remember to pray

Help me remember the blessings in my life!
-My healthy children
-My faithful husband
-My career that affords me much flexibility and work/life balance
-Coworkers and friends that I can lean on
-A home with a working A/C (praise the lord!)
-Reliable transportation
-My parents and brother
-My health...even with this pesky psoriasis that won't clear up as quickly as I want it to!

Help me remember the Lord is omniscient and worthy of praise!
-He knows the path for our family...even when we don't or have a path of our own in mind
-He knows the path of this nation even when I worry about laws or decisions being made

This week will be devoted to praising God for His blessings vs worrying about my own needs.

3rd Grade Trauma

I was talking to Southern Boy about this memory the other day...  I'm not sure why this memory is so burned into my brain that it randomly pops up other than the fact that it must have traumatized me when it occurred....  Morgan was trying to read her nighttime story with me...specifically, she tries to say the words with me...as I say them....super fun...  This triggered my third grade memory...

I had a 3rd grade teacher in Nebraska that I absolutely loved....I adored her...  She's the kind of teacher I hope Morgan or Kylee have one day.  If you remember third grade, that's an age where you still hold your teacher up on that magical pedestal.  After lunch, our teacher would read to us from a chapter book while we sat at our desks and colored.  She was reading Charlotte's Web - one of my favorites!  I remember mouthing the words silently to myself while my teacher read out loud and I colored happily.  I was really in my own little world and happy as could be.  All of a sudden I noticed the teacher had stopped reading, and I looked up from coloring.  She was standing by my desk looking down at me and said out loud, "You are so rude" and then walked away.  I don't remember if she kept reading after that point because I was filled with so much shame that the teacher found me rude that I don't think I would have noticed.

I was not raised to run home after school and cry about my hurt feelings to my parents, so out of embarrassment, I never shared this story with them.  Looking back as an adult, the adult Diane would approach the teacher at a later time and ask for clarification of how I was rude.  I would have apologized for the perception and communicated that it was not my intention to be  rude.

Crazy how a third grade memory can still bring back feelings of shame and embarrassment....

Did I say this was the type of teacher I hope Morgan and Kylee have one day?  The embarrassed me might like to take that statement back...

How kids bring a smile to my face!

Here's a few moments that have made me smile - ok - in some cases - really laugh out loud recently:

Morgan: "When I'm a mommy one day, I won't be the Morgan anymore!"

Morgan: "When I'm a mommy one day, you and I will be the same number (age) and we can go shopping with our babies."

Morgan: "Mommy, you are my best friend...but only sometimes..."

Note on Kylee's daily report from daycare: "Today I tried to walk with the walker - but as it moves - the music starts playing...and I have to stop and dance!"

Kylee's Birth Story - 9 months later

Trying to get back into the habit of blogging...  Luckily, Blogger has an iPhone app that makes this super convenient!

Since I was on a blogging hiatus when Kylee was born, I want to note down her birth story now - since my memory will get even fuzzier with time...

Kylee was due 10/15/12.  We were hoping that, like her sister, she would arrive a week or so early.  Since we live in AZ and all of our family lives in NE, we were a little concerned about child care arrangements for Morgan when mommy and daddy go to the hospital.  We have a great group of friends that could watch Morgan - but even within that group - there were several vacations and business trips planned during the month of October.  My parents made travel plans to be in AZ from 10/13/12-10/20/12.  We were ready for Kylee!  But despite my best efforts (long walks, a trip to the zoo, dancing around the house, lots of spicy foods), Kylee didn't arrive 9 days early like her sister!  10/15/12 arrived and no signs of pre-labor...wasnt even dilated at all.  And in fact, the internal exam was very uncomfortable...even painful.  The hospital we delivered Morgan at had a policy against inducing until the mother was at least one week past due.  Because we had a limited window of when my parents would be in town to care for Morgan, my doctor reached out to another local hospital (equal distance from our home but in the other direction) to determine if there was availability for a planned induction.  We learned that planned inductions were full for the next two weeks.  Cue the hysterical, full-term pregnant mother!  I went home from my appt disappointed and anxious about child care options if Kylee decided to take her sweet time...  Two hours later, I received a call from my OB stating she pulled some strings and we were scheduled for an induction at 8 AM on 10/17/12!  *Happy Dance!*

Southern Boy went to work on 10/16/12 and Grandma, Grandpa, mommy and Morgan spent the day celebrating Momo's last day as an only child.  We went to the mall and did build a bear (Morgan built a bear for herself and bought a matching mini bear for her sister).
The rest of the day was spent playing Candy Land and in the backyard!

The next day - 10/17/12 - we woke up and ate a hearty breakfast since it was going to be my last meal for a while, took one last pic as a family of three, and then Southern Boy and I took off for the hospital!

The process of getting registered for a planned induction was the most relaxing and pleasant process.  We signed our paperwork and releases and followed our liaison to the delivery wing.  I changed into the ever attractive hospital gown and got hooked up to the monitors.  The nurse was shocked once we got the monitors on: I was having long and fairly strong contractions.  During this process I had a contraction that lasted over 5 minutes and was registering as a strong contraction.  We started the Pitocin and gave two thumbs up to the nurse.  After an hour on the Pitocin, the nurse wanted to check my progress.  The internal exam was so painful - it made me cry!  This was so unexpected because I remembered my internal exams with Morgan and they were not painful at all.  (Forshadowing #1).  Little progress - but not much.  Pitocin was increased.  A little while later, my OB came in to check on how I was doing.  At this point, I'm fairly certain the nurse gave my OB a heads up that my last internal exam was painful.  The Dr decided to do a quick internal exam.  I was in so much pain during this exam, the nurse had to help pin me down as I had almost pushed myself off the top of the bed.  This is when I learned that the opening to my uterus was "off-center" and the Dr tried to manually adjust the opening to line up front and center.  (Forshadowing #2). During tis time, she also broke my water.  Luckily the water did not have meconium like Morgan's!  Yay!  With the water broken, contractions started to get really intense and it was time for that blessed epidural. The anesthesiologist had a few struggles lining everything up - but the final result was splendid!  I can't really say how much time went by, but the nurse came in and was very intent on reviewing my monitors.  Kylee's heart rate started dropping.  I wasn't too worried as this occurred with Morgan as well and wearing an oxygen mask fixed that concern for Morgan!  So, we added the oxygen mask and hoped for the best.  Unfortunately, there wasn't improvement.  At this time the nurse and the OB were present and watching the monitors.  We tried different positions and discussed that if we didn't see improvement in the next 10-15 minutes, we may need to discuss Caesarian.  Shortly after those words came out of her mouth my vision went blurry and I had a hard time focusing...I couldn't clearly see the clock on the wall or Southern Boy who was standing next to me.  Everything started beeping around me.  I later found out that my blood pressure had suddenly dropped to a severely low level as did Kylee's heart rate at the same time.  I remembered hearing the Dr saying, "no time to wait" and started speaking in code into her pager.  The nurse basically threw scrubs at Southern Boy and my room was swarmed with nurses and aides who were trying to unplug chords and move my bed out of the room into the O.R.  At this point, I lost sight of Southern Boy and was being prepped for the emergency C-Section.  He walked into the O.R. as the screen was being pulled up to block site of the surgery.  They told him to get his camera ready.  Just in time, he unlocked his phone and pulled up the camera app - Kylee entered the world!

Southern Boy followed Kylee to recovery where she received some oxygen as her little toes were blue.  We had decided early in our pregnancy that our family would be complete after Kylee.  We had signed all release forms that if a C-Section was needed, that we request a tubal ligation.  So - they tied my tubes and sewed me up!

Kylee was an absolute angel in the hospital and showed us she was really going to be our "mellow" baby!  She met her big sissy and Grandma and Grandpa!

I elected for an early dismissal from the hospital and went home after two nights. I was ready to get back to my own bed and my parents were scheduled to leave the next morning.

Recovery from the C-Section was easier for me than recovery from a vaginal birth.  Although all new parents will struggle with sleep deprivation, we were thrilled with our most recent blessing!

Welcome to the world, Kylee Ann!  You gave us quite a scare before you arrived, but you were we'll worth it!

Does a two year lapse count as a really long vacation or should I start a new blog?

Most of my friends link their blogs to Facebook, so I rarely feel the need to log into the actual blogging site.  That being said....I logged in today for fun...started poking around on a few blogs I used to visit...and for fun decided to visit my long lost blog.  Last post: 8/31/2011.

Seriously?

Almost TWO (2) (dos) years later.... where do I start?

The kids! (Plural)

Somewhere during that crazy two year break - we decided to have another child.  We were blessed with our second girl, Kylee, on October 17, 2012.  She is such a blessing and we are excited to have our family complete!  Today - Kylee is 9 months old.  She is a crawling, drooling, smiling machine!  She pulls herself up and our guess is that she will be walking by 11 months.  She LOVES her big sister and the cat.  She sleeps well at night (12 hours) but is not a strong napper.  We rarely get a nap in longer than 30 min while we are at home.  She naps the best when we are out and about and she is in her car seat.

Say hello to Kylee!

Onto Morgan - our almost 4 year old girl. Where has time gone?  Since the last post, Morgan has started attending Kindercare (along with Kylee).  Since starting at Kindercare, her vocabulary, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills have grown exponentially.  She is a warm, caring heart and a fantastic big sister.  She is into Disney right now and more specifically Disney Princesses!  Morgan loves dressing up and playing pretend.  But most of all - she loves dance parties at home with mommy, daddy, and sissy!

Our big girl, Morgan!

On to the hubby!  Southern Boy left working for the state of AZ and now works for the City of Phoenix.  Oh don't worry - he's still looking at bridges...and now dams and levies - oh my!  :-D. Also during this *ahem* break, Chris obtained his PE in Civil Engineering!  Yay Southern Boy!

Someone turned 30 during this blogging hiatus!

And what's new with me?  How kind of you to ask!  I'm still at the same employer mentioned in the last post.  Things are going great.  I work with a fantastic team, and I enjoy what I do (the majority of the time).  More recently, I experienced my first bout of strep throat ever.  I can now attest to how unpleasant strep throat can be.  Even more unpleasant - what came next.  Two weeks after completing the antibiotics, I broke out in a horrible rash.  The following three weeks brought multiple false diagnoses by the family doctor...and a worsening rash.  Literally covered from scalp to hip with additional spots on the leg.  After ruling out the fabric softener, soy, amoxicillin allergies...mono, valley fever....  A biopsy and referral to the dermatologist, I've learned that I have Guttate Psoriasis.  A rare form if Psoriasis, it is triggered by strep throat.  It is a life-long disease - and expect an outbreak if I get strep throat again.  As for right now - I have "light therapy" 3 times/week for 6 weeks and a lot of steroid cream.  After one session - huge improvements!  Note: these next pictures are not for the squeamish!

The flare up on 7/16/13:
The hives/welts are in my ear even!  Augh!  Note: they burned and itched.  No fun!

7/18/13: One light therapy session and steroid cream later:
The welts aren't raised anymore.  They aren't as red.  They don't burn anymore! Praise The Lord for modern medicine!

Why after two years would I pick up blogging?  I watched a video yesterday where a father taped this child everyday and then composed a video of a second for every day.  It made me realize how much you forget if its not recorded.  I update Facebook a lot...but it's a place full of acquaintances and...it's Facebook...  So - will try to keep up with blogging...  I don't want to forget the trials and the joys of this time in our lives!
